You can tell them (Amish Builder) that I cried when I saw it. I’ve wanted to have an heirloom quality hope chest for at least 30 years. Thank you for helping to get the engraving straightened out. I am very happy with the finished product. And the color is perfect!! !! It’s an incredible piece of furniture. It was worth the wait! 

Making and Carving a Chest

Random widths of about one inch thick oak or other hardwood are laid side by side with the curve of the grain reversed each time. Then they are glued while under a fair amount of lateral pressure.
The next day the panels are planed to close enough to 3/4 inch thick that they can be put through several successively finer sandings to make the final panel for assembly.
The boards to be carved go to the carver and are held by a vacuum table for the carving.
Then the panels return to the Amish builder who has already cut them to the final sizes.
(Then they may go to the Amish-owned dovetail machine which is also CNC computer controlled, all powered by a diesel generator.)
We take them back to the Amish builder who assembles and glues the chest and locates the hardware and hinges and adds the feet, or the bottom to the chest.
Then the chest is sanded to perfection.
We take it to the finisher who seals the oak and sands it. The stain is hand rubbed and sanded to finer degrees.The next day a coat of polyurethane is applied. We use a kid-safe finish.
Then the next coat of poly is applied and dries overnight.
We ship the finished chest in a special double-wall carton, using corner protectors and a bubble wrap strong enough to stand upon.
Finally FedEx picks up the packed and insured chest and delivers it to you.
When a hardwood panel is carved, the bit used is triangular, so the wider the stroke of a letter, the deeper the cut.
That is the beauty of CNC carving.
The same width change and depth change occurs with the names.
So the Bookman type style will be carved deeper and more "stark" and boyish, perhaps, than Apple Chancery which has a lighter result.
The carver also has a multi-thousand dollar set of software that translates both the proof and the actual carving to a result that is very close to the final carving. So these proofs are very accurate and are in fact the template that flows to the CNC carving machine.

ABOUT OUR FAMILY 

Our son Eddie Bedford lived with Muscular Dystrophy for 13 years and went home to Jesus in 1980.
Our son Bill Bedford lived with Muscular Dystrophy for 43 years. He helped found this website. He went home to the Lord in 2013.

My wife Kathleen Ann Bedford - Married 56 years- went home to Jesus on 9/19/2022 and to our two sons Eddie and Bill after an Alzheimer's related illness. A friend said, "Heaven is rejoicing in her presence!"  Ed Bedford

Ed: I remember you and Kathy as you mourn her loss. You blessed her so beautifully as you worked so hard to keep her at home with you. She fought the good fight against Alzheimer’s and is at peace with her maker. You fought the good fight against Alzheimer’s with her and your halo may be waiting. But, you are still alive and given the gift of earthly life for perhaps several years yet. Enjoy them, celebrating the family you have loved so absolutely beautifully. 

 

One great reason that Eddie and Bill and Kathy had such full and productive lives was due to our daughter Sharon (Bedford) Douglas and her great help to us from her time as an infant. Her husband Dan Douglas stepped forward over 26 years ago since their engagement to add a level of comfort and wonderful activities for Bill and Kathy and me, Ed, first at their home in Michigan and later when they moved to Rocky River, Ohio! From almost the time they were infants our granddaughters, Zoe age 24, and Lucy age 16 were always there for Bill and Kathy, and me.


When Kathy went to the nursing home when I took ill, Sharon and Dan handled all the financial and bureaucratic details to get Kathy enrolled permanently at Ennis Court. They and Zoe and Lucy visited her there regularly with flowers and games and news of the family. Kathy was taken care of very well there and enjoyed the food and the staff and the fresh flowers inside and outside the home. She was happy there until her transfer to hospice, almost a year later.
 
 
Weather and other delays often occur in the Amish and our community, thus we are completely unable to GUARANTEE any delivery. We and they will do our best, but we are not liable in any way for delays, regardless of the cause!
 
Because hardwood is a natural product, created by nature and then finished by skilled Amish craftsmen, you can expect the usual variations in wood color, stain color, some degree of cherry pits, even in so-called clear cherry (Filled for regular cherry, normally open for Rustic Cherry). Knots vary from minor to major for the Rustic versions of the hardwoods, QSWO, OAK, CHERRY and HICKORY.
 
Our sizes are nominal and should be correct, but we may also make errors. If a given dimension is critical, please call to let us know that and to confirm the dimensions. Differences of an inch or so are not errors, but just the result of the hand made process as practiced by the Amish builders. Thanks!
